September 18, 2012

Oh my! I am so behind! Too many school field trips. Well, let's get on with it shall we?

My breakfast

I bought this from Izysheng ㄧ之軒 the same day I purchased that beautiful chocolate croissant. It has 肉鬆 aka "pork floss". Although I am more familiar with the American kind slathered with mayo and this did not have as much, I still found it good. The bread is nice and soft.

My lunch

My veggie lunch
I went to a vegetarian buffet east of my school. My meal cost me $100NT and is now a, I suppose, found memory. One thing I really dislike about this buffets is that everything is lukewarm to cold. :( But I like that this place had yummy eggplant, good tofu options, and egg with that crunchy vegetable thing...or whatever may be inside. Inside of rice, I had some noodles. All and all, I can't remember this meal days later. But since I clearly don't have a bad memory associated with it, I would be willing to go there again.

My dinner in Danshui/Tamshui 淡水

Green tea and strawberry ice cream

Picture fail. Didn't capture the green side so much. I bought some ice cream ($15NT for 小 size). It was delicious. It's more like a yogurt than an ice cream as I recall. It's lighter and less creamy. I was worried that the flavor would be too artificial what with neon colors being pooped out of the machine. It wasn't a problem, and it was a good start to the dinner which followed.
What on earth is this?...agei tofu?
I was in Danshui for my field trip on Tuesday. It has interesting history, and some nice buildings built by/for foreigners. But let's not kind anyone, my favorite part was going to the night market! At night, like most places in Taiwan I suppose, the waterfront really comes alive with food and games. I like it because there is less hustle and bustle than other markets. Unfortunately, I didn't find Danshui particularly gorgeous because it seemed a bit smoggy.... Anyway, the above there is, I think, agi tofu which is this bean curd skin (with a bit of shrimp or fish paste in it) stuffed with rice noodles and doused in some red sauce. It wasn't the most flavorful thing in the world. I've never had it before, so maybe it's one of those it-grows-on-you things.

I just looked it up, 阿給豆腐, and CNN, you are so wrong about it being something we can't live without...I can definitely live without it.

My mistake

San xing cong duo bing

With the famous San Xing name, I had hoped this would be crazy delicious and a good substitution for cong you bing 蔥油餅 (green onion pancake) and, boy, was I disappointed. I love green onions, so I thought a fat, fried ball of dough full of fresh green onions would be delicious. I was so wrong! Perhaps I chose wrong. There were three flavors: something with meat, something with something else, and something with 皮蛋 (century egg). In my moment of forgetfulness, I order the one with 皮蛋 thinking that I would be rewarded with a mixture of rice noodle, egg, and green onion. Jokes on me because...wait a minute, that's a different food item called 韭菜盒子- and it's made with chives, not green onion! Dumb dumb me. Sad sad day. Many food mistakes made today...

  1. Yum, 阿給! :P You're right, perhaps you just get used to it. I tried fried mushrooms at Danshui... so good.
