This morning, thanks to my brother for directions, I had fan tuan with purple rice ($35NT) and milk tea ($15, small cup). Deliciousssssss. You can choose spice levels, and I'm definitely amp-ing it up next time.
I wasn't hungry come lunch time, and since Taiwan is damply hot (blazing isn't the right word here, since the sun stays mostly hidden), my friend and I decided something icy would be a good way to cool off. So, across from the spotted cow place near the dorms, we went to the store with the fancy ginormous sign advertising niao nai bing. Mango ($70NT) was fairly good. Especially delicious because of the relief it brought. There is some as of yet unidentifiable brown syrup (pear? caramel?) similar in taste to the one used at Chen San Ding. Do not be afraid. It is tasty.
Right before dinner, I made sure to spoil my appetite with some high calorie Chen San Ding Xian Nai with the extremely sweet Zhenzhu, $30NT. With a visiting friend from Washington, I wondered down to Shuiyuan Market. I settled on a stand with a variety of dishes, especially attracted by the "morning glory" (as some call it), sausage, and tofu with chives. This nice little meal cost $50NT. Such a nice homey meal. Across the way, was a stand with a similar set-up. Except, they had steamed fish, and, oh my, these fishies looked so good I'm definitely going back for a bite.
